Do you have a system in place to get referrals from past clients or customers? If the answer is no, then you are missing out on a lot of business that is yours for the taking. Many companies are built on referrals alone and the reason for this is simple.

Referrals are faster to close and have a higher lifetime value. If a potential client finds out about your company from someone they trust, they are more likely to trust you and give you their business.

Setting up a referral system doesn’t have to be difficult. A simple email to your past clients is more than enough in the beginning.

Here are a few tips to take into consideration when asking for a referral via email.

  1. Make sure that your message is personal for each client.
    Never send a client a generic message because they will know it from a mile away. Be sure to mention the product they purchased or the service that you provided. Let them know that you enjoyed working with them. These are relationships that you should nurture and they could be a source for more business for years to come.
  2. Make it easy for them to give you a referral.
    Business owners are usually busy people. Tell them exactly what they need to do to refer you and make is as easy as possible. The more complicated your email is, the less likely it is that you will get a referral.
  3. Optional: Offer a fee/gift for any referrals sent your way.
    Showing gratitude and appreciation is important. It is also an incentive for past clients to send you referrals. Everyone wins which is how it should be. This tip is my favorite and I highly recommend it.

Below is a sample email template that you can customize for your company and use right away.

Hi {clients name},

Thank you again for {task that was done for client}. Knowing that you are happy with the {product/service} that I provided really made my day.

As the owner of a growing {business title/category}, I am always on the lookout for {target client} that need assistance with {your specialty}. Do you know of anyone who could use my help? If so, could you please send me their contact information?

If you could reply to this email with the contact information of 1-2 friends or tweet this link out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also as another way to saying thanks, I would like to give you {insert discount here} for every person who becomes my client.

Thank you for taking the time and I look forward to working with you in the future,
